Metropolis is a two-part documentary that follows Los Angeles architect Jenny Wu as she travels to Singapore in search of inspiration on third spaces.
‘Third spaces’ – community spaces outside our homes and offices – isn’t a term we often hear locally. Yet, they’re a recurring feature of our urban environment. Through Jenny’s perspective, we begin to notice how much of this we’ve taken for granted.
What drew me to the project was director Jeevan Nathan’s brief to craft distinct visual identities for Singapore and LA.
For Singapore, I brought out its vibrance while maintaining clean separation between greenery and architecture to highlight the seamless way nature is integrated into our cityscape.
For LA – which I’ve always associated with a more cinematic, saccharine visual language – I shifted the hue distribution toward orange and teal. This creates a distinct but intentionally simplified colour contrast.
The visual difference between the two locations becomes a visual cue for Jenny’s own journey, her world widening as she encounters a new visual palette, and expanding her understanding of what a third space can be.
