Part 3 of the documentary series Karikal Mahal: A Silent Witness on Channel NewsAsia.
After the fall of Singapore to the Japanese army in WWII, Karikal Mahal was repurposed into a prisoner-of-war camp. This episode tells the story of the imprisonment and life in Karikal Mahal during this time, including notable POWs such as Straits Settlement Governor Sir Shenton Thomas and Chief Surveyor Thomas Kitching.
Director Rowena suggested blue-green tones, similar to the modern remake of All Quiet on the Western Front. I incorporated this colour scheme to communicate the grimness of the period, but further muted the colours to counterbalance the vibrance and introduced more contrast to make it feel more bleak.
