Part 1 of the documentary series Karikal Mahal: A Silent Witness on Channel NewsAsia.
This part of the series chronicles the rise and fall of ‘the Cattle King’ – Moona Kader Sultan – from 1879 to the 1930s, including the period when he commissioned the construction of Karikal Mahal as a wealthy merchant.
I created three looks for this part of the docu series.
The first is a golden look with more textural elements like grain to hint at a golden age that only belonged to the past.
The second is a softer, more elegant look only for scenes within Karikal Mahal to highlight its opulence
The third is a cleaner look for modern shots of Karikal Mahal to visually anchor the time period to the present.
I found it fascinating to learn about the drama behind this historical estate and figure, and am glad to have watched and contributed to the visuals of the dramatic re-enactment of his life journey.
