Roots is the first micro-drama I’ve graded, and it’s a touching SG Story about a hairdresser and her daughter.
It was interesting tackling this format for the first time. While slightly disorienting at first, it was refreshing to work on a simple narrative arc across 5 short episodes.
Director Nicholas Wang and I bonded over the specific time period set in Roots. Since we’re the same age, the film’s cues about our youth really resonated with us. The result is a grade that carries a sentimental warmth, evoking memory without straying too far from the recent past.
